Haiti’s President Michel Martelly said he was “saddened” by news of the death of Malawi President Dr Bingu Wa Mutharika, the National Palace announced.

Mutharika, 78, died Friday of cardiac arrest.

Martelly said he hoped that the country’s political transition could be achieved in a “peaceful and serene” climate, as a tribute to the memory of Mutharika.

Martelly is currently in Miami following surgery on his right shoulder.

Haiti is currently an observer in the African Union and seeking full member status.
