The inaugural session of the OECS Regional Assembly is on track to be held in Antigua on June 15.

The new regional assembly, whose convention was decided at the 54th Meeting of the OECS Authority earlier this year, is one of the new organs under the Revised Treaty of Basseterre.

The assembly looks to provide a forum to debate issues affecting the Eastern Caribbean, comprised of government and opposition representatives from each OECS member states, reflecting their proportional representation in their own parliaments.

Dr Rosemarie Husbands Mathurin has been contracted by the OECS to strengthen technical support for the assembly to be able to begin operations.

Mathurin visited Antigua Monday and Tuesday to consult with senior officials about the first assembly.

“Antigua and Barbuda is truly honoured to be the seat of the Assembly, and to host the inaugural session of this new regional parliament,” said Antigua Finance Minister Harold Lovell. “My sub-committee is working hard to ensure that we have an historic first session that launches a new chapter in the success story that is OECS regional integration.”
