Guyana Power & Light is set to begin laying the submarine cable to improve the power supply to the country’s West Demerara area, part of a $42 million infrastructural development programme.
The cable, which will be laid from the West Demerara section of the revere to the power plant at Kingston.
“The people of West Demerara, they are going to see a dramatic improvement in the quality and the reliability of their supply, because we are going to have the ability now using the brand-new 36 megawatt plant that we have here and other capacity in Demerara to deliver power to West Demerara,” said GPL CEO Bharrat Dindyal.
The cable is part of an overall project financed by a loan from China. It provides for the construction of seven sub-stations and is aimed at upgrading transmission lines to better deliver electricity.
The cable has the capacity to deliver more than 150 megawatts of power, and will be laid 3.5 meters below the Demerara River.
The experts and personnel laying the cable were brought in by the Chinese, according to the government.
