The Nevis Island Administration has established an import-export unit at the Long Point Port, according to Dwight Morton, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade.
Morton said the establishment to the unit was important given the requirement that importers and exporters have proper authorization.
“There have been a number of persons who would have imported items without proper authorization, and similarly the same for exports,” he said. “Now, we have the facility at the Port right next to Customs so anybody who wants to importn, who needs an import licence, can go to the Long Point facility.”
The new unit will also help to facilitate data collection, he said, with a lack of quality statistics in the area of items imported and exported out of the island.
“This Unit will go a long way towards providing the necessary data, which will become vey vital and critical to help the government determine and find out exactly the quantity, volume and value of goods being imported and exported from the country,” he said.
