Guyana Reports Drop in Murders, Increase in Number of Armed Robberies

Guyana saw a 26 percent decrease in murders through the end of February compared to the same period in 2011, according to the Guyana Police Force.

There were 17 murders in the country at the end of February, compared to 23 at the end of February 2011.

The decrease in murders and increase in armed robberies continued a trend seen in January.

The country saw a large increase in the number of armed robberies, however, with a 34 percent jump compared to February 2011.

There were a total of 171 reports of armed robberies through the end of February, compared to 128 in the same period last year.

According to the data, 25 percent of armed robberies involved firearms, with a 50 percent increase in the number of armed robberies with instruments other than firearms.
