The Organization of Eastern Caribbean States has issued a statement mourning the death of former Grenadian Prime Minister George Brizan.

“It is with deep regret that I learn of the death of Mr George Brizan,” said Dr Len Ishmael, the OECS’ Director General. “This distinguished and venerable son of Grenada and the OECS has left behind a legacy that has made an indelible mark on the history and politics of the Eastern Caribbean region.”

Ishmael called the “untimely death” of Brizan a “tragic loss to all,” though noting that his “lifetime of achievements and legacy will live on.”

Brizan’s body will lie in state at the Grenada Trade Centre, which houses Grenada’s Parliament, on the morning of March 15th for public viewing.

That will begin a two-day mourning period in Grenada, with all flags on public buildings flown at half mast.

Brizan, who died Feb. 18, will be buried March 16.
