Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez will take a ride on the second Metro line in Santo Domingo Feb. 27 to test out the new route, on which construction is ongoing.

According to Leonel Carrasco, the director of the Office for the Reorganization of Transportation, the President’s visit would aim to verify the “effectiveness” of the rail system expansion, dubbed “Line 2.”

Three more stations still remain to be built before the project is complete, Carrasco said.

The capital’s rail system was first constructed in 2008, and began service in 2009. The “Line 2” expansion aims to give greater access across the Santo Domingo metropolitan area from west to east.
