While the Arab Spring and its accordant political volatility halted Guyana’s desire to establish relations with country’s in the Middle East, it has renewed its efforts in that regard.

Several countries in the Middle East could be looking to form ties with Guyana, according to Ambassador George Hallaq, Guyana’s Honorary Envory to the Middle East.

“Countries in the Middle East are interested,” Hallaq said after a meeting with President Donald Ramotar. “We have to follow up and continue, and in the end we will succeed.”

In 2009, former President Bharrat Jagdeo made a series of State Visits to the region, including Syria, Libya, Cyprus, Jordan, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Iran, signing a number of Memoranda of Understanding in the process.
