St Lucia Education Minister Dr Robert Lewis and Trinidad and Tobago Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh met today to focus on issues of education in the two countries.

The visit took place in Port of Spain at the Ministry of Education’s Head Office in St Clair.

The purpose of Lewis’ visit was to look at Trinidad’s laptop initiative, the so-called eConnect and Learning programme, which is aimed at infusing the study of Information and Communication Technology into children’s development. eCal provides laptop computers to secondary school students in Trinidad.

The programme is not alone in the region, however — Guyana, with help from China, has begun the distribution of thousands of Haier netbooks to residents in that country as part of a similar drive on ICT.
