OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza congratulated incoming Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller on her victory in Thursday’s election.

Insulza said the victory was a “confirmation of the confidence which people of Jamaica have in your leadership abilities.”

In a letter to Simpson Miller, he noted that, according to election reports, Jamaicans were able to vote freely and fairly in a peaceful atmosphere.

“This is a tribute to the strongly-held democratic traditions for which the Caribbean region is well-known, and further proof that democracy continues to be strengthened in Jamaica,” he said.

Insulza said the OAS extended its full support to Simpson Miller’s government, wishing to assure her that the OAS stood “ready to work” with her and her administration to advance Jamaica’s development needs.

Simpson Miller will be sworn in tomorrow in a ceremony at Kingston’s King’s House.
