Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar will travel to India Monday on a state visit as an official guest of the government of India.
Persad-Bissessar will pay a courtesy call on Indian President Smt. Partibha Devisingh Patil and Vice President Hamid Ansari. She will also meet with Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to hold high-level talks.
She will also be the chief guest at the annual Pravasi Bhartiya Divas event in Jaipur, which recognizes non-resident Indians globally.
Persad-Bissessar, who is of Indian descent, is the first female head of government in the Indian diaspora.
India and Trinidad held their first-ever Joint Commission in November, led by Trinidad’s Foreign Minister Dr Surujrattan Rambachan.
According to Public Utilities Minister Emmanuel George, Trinidad is looking to India in particular for its expertise in broadband internet access and water management technologies.
In a report last month, the United Nation’s Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean identified India as a potential major trading partner for the region.
