Bouterse, LaRocque Meet in Suriname

Suriname President and Incoming CARICOM Chairman Desi Bouterse met with Secretary General Irwin LaRocque in Surianme today as part of the latter’s two-day visit in the country.

Bouterse will become chairman on Jan. 1, 2012, and will hold the position for six months, succeeding St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas.

The two discussed the start of operations at the Caribbean Health and Food Safety Agency, which is headquartered in Suriname.

Suriname is the fifth CARICOM member state visited by LaRocque since he assumed office Aug. 15.
