Grenadian Tourism Minister Calls for End to LIAT Standoff

Grenadian Tourism Minister Peter David has called for an end to the impasse between airliner LIAT and the union representing the company’s workers.

The Minister issued a statement yesterday after LIAT pilots staged a sick-out in which none showed up for work, apparently in repines to LIAT’s announcement that it had terminated its employment relationship with Captain Michael Blackburn.

The airline did not give reasons why it severed ties with Blackburn, who was born in Grenada, and is the chairman of the Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association.

The LIAT sick-out affected even Prime Minister Tillman Thomas, who had been scheduled to fly to St Lucia.

“The management of LIAT and the union must find a way to resolve this crisis because it not only impacts on LIAT but also on the economies of the entire Eastern Caribbean,” David said.
