Holness Calls for Safe, Peaceful Election

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has called for peaceful and incident-free elections, according to a statement.

The announcement followed reports of the stoning of buses transporting supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party from its rally in Mandeville Sunday night, when Holness announced the Dec. 29 election date.

Holness has instructed Information Minister Arthur Williams to make a formal report to the Political Ombudsman and the Security Forces.

“Senator Williams noted that both the Ombudsman and the police are being requested to monitor the situation, to ensure that no one is made to feel intimidated and should be free to openly promote and support the political party of their choice,” he said.

According to Williams, there were reports of injuries and that several buses were “seriously damaged.”

“These bus operators were not politically engaged,” Williams said. “They were carrying out there regular business and have suffered major financial losses with these attacks.”
