Guyana’s Ruling PPP/C Party has won the country’s election, according to preliminary results released by the Guyana Elections Commission.
According to the latest tally of votes in the general election, the ruling PPP/C party received 148,199 votes, with teh APNU party receiving 115,783 votes.
In the latest tally by GECOM, just over 62 percent of the votes had been counted.
By an earlier count released by GECOM last night, the PPP/C had taken a total of 136,881 votes in the general election, with the A Partnership for National Unity party (APNU) taking 109,673 votes. Coming in third was the AFC, which received 58,049 votes.
Regionally, the PPP/C took 7 of 10 regions, for a total of 136,003 votes. The APNU finished with 107,179.
Guyana’s National Assembly is chosen via proportional representation from each region.
Elections were held in the country on Monday, and the country was increasingly impatient waiting for the results — current President Bharrat Jagdeo (who is not running in this election) called for an immediate release of the results, which came at 11:00 PM tonight.
