Guyanese President Bharrat Jagdeo has called on Guyana’s Elections Commission to accelerate its declaration on the preliminary results of Monday’s vote.
Jagdeo, who is not running for another term (the country’s constitution prohibits it), expressed disappointment over the pace of the results, and called for an announcement “immediately.”
His party, the PPP/C, had called for a recount despite no official declaration of a result, a call which was later retracted.
“By now all of the parties that contested the national elections know the results because all of the parties were in polling stations, they had signed statements of poll that they all received after the counts were done … so it’s incumbent upon them to accelerate the declaration of preliminary results at least so as to remove this unease and uncertainty that a lot of our citizens face.
There were a number of false reports spread around he country declaring victory for both sides.
A preliminary statement issued last night by the CARICOM Electoral Observer Mission said the vote on Monday took place “under good conditions.”
“The mission’s assessment of election day is that the people of Guyana were given the opportunity under good conditions to elect a government,” it said in a statement.
