Antigua’s House of Representatives passed a bill that will make several major changes to the country’s electoral commission, along with making minor adjustments to the process of maintaining a registry of electors in the country.
“Some of the amendments are merely consequential, others are seeking to address some issues that would have affected the smooth running of the election, the administration and otherwise, of the system,” said Prime Minister Dr Baldwin Spencer. “We are seeking to address that.”
The Representation of the People (Amendment) Act also introduced a revised procedure for the appointment of members of the electoral commission, and would increase the number of members on the commission from five to seven.
The Chamber of Commerce and the Church organizations will be given the power of one the nomination of one member each.
