The top United Nations envoy to Haiti said he was concerned over the political tension arising from the arrest of Haitian Member of Parliament Arnel Belizaire.
Belizaire was reportedly arrested after police spotted his name on a list of prison inmates who escaped on the day of the Haitian earthquake.
Fernandez said the arrest was “harmful” to Haiti’s interests, and might also hinder the implementation of government programmes.
The UN official, who heads the world body’s peacekeeping unit in the country, encouraged dialogue and invited authorities to “clarify the legal process.”
