Approximately 32 parties have indicated interest in contesting Guyana’s national and regional elections Nov. 28, although the number may fall, according to Dr Steve Surujbally, chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission.
Oct. 27 has been designated as nomination day, when all political parties interesting in contesting the elections will submit their respective lists of candidates. Surujbally was speaking at a press briefing at Cara Lodge in Georgetown.
The Elections Commission has already met with several parties to give guidance on filling out nomination forms, including the ruling PPP/C, the APNU, the AFC, Vision for Change, Unity Party and the Guyana United Muslim Party.
The GECOM has also created a Code of Conduct for political parties. That has been sent to 19 parties, but two have returned, a source of growing controversy in the country.
