Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding will formally resign on Sunday, Oct. 23, when Education Minister Andrew Holness will be sworn in as Jamaica’s next Prime Minister, his office said in statement.

Golding presided over his final cabinet meeting today. After the meeting, the Prime Minister convened a meeting of MPs and received a “unanimous” formal endorsement of Holness as the Prime Minister.

Last week, Golding had said, through Information Minister Daryl Vaz, that his plan was to wait until at least Oct. 19, the date when nominations are to be closed.

Nov. 19 is the date that had been set for the Jamaica Labour Party to elect a new leader, and Vaz said that it was not Golding’s intention “to stay to the last day.”
