Grenada Plans Nutmeg Expansion

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Grenada is working to develop a strategy for greater private sector involvement in the country’s nutmeg industry, something Prime Minister Tillman Thomas said he welcomed.

Thomas was speaking after a presentation of the Grenada Nutmeg Sector Development Strategy and its implementation progress by the country’s National Coordinating Committee.

The committee is working with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Grenada Cooperative Nutmeg Association, the Ministry of Trade and the IICA along with farmers and processors.

“What is unique about this strategy is that it invokes a bottom-up approach to the management and enhancement of the industry,” Thomas said.

The Prime Minister said that Grenada has a “wonderful chance to rebuild its nutmeg industry to the benefit of its people.”

The plan aims to achieve long-term sustainability for the industry, reinforce market information and increase the quality and quantity of nutmeg produced.
