Mariano Fernandez, the Special Representative of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon in Haiti, voiced hope that the decision by Haiti’s Senate to approve Garry Conille as Prime Minister could mean accelerated reconstruction efforts in the country.

Fernandez hailed the endorsement, calling on all sectors of the Haitian economy to work to agree on initiatives to strengthen democratic institutions, ensure peace and promote development.

Fernandez urged Haiti’s Parliament to approve Conille’s programme, in order to prevent further delay in reconstruction efforts.

Conille was the chief of staff for former US President Bill Clinton during the latter’s capacity as UN Special Envoy for Haiti.

His UN career has lasted since 1999.
