A proposed development in the South East Peninsular of St Kitts is the subject of a row between Prime Minister Denzil Douglas and the opposition People’s Action Movement.
Douglas, wrapping up debate in the National Assembly, slammed what he called the PAM’s opposition to the project, saying it was “obvious” that the party wanted no development in the area.
“They want no development in that area,” he said. “All they want the government to do is to fill potholes on the road.”
Douglas pointed to a previous project under the PAM administration of approximately $8.14 million, involving a loan to pay for building a road through the property of land owners.
“It is time for the people of St Kitts and Nevis [to] begin to benefit from that investment,” he said.
The site is on the southeastern, Caribbean coast of St Kitts. Owners and developers of the Coast to Coast/Peninsular Cove project recently completed the first phase of the project.
According to the PAM, the controversy comes in part due to provisions within a related bill, which would reduce stamp duties for transfers of land or property to create the conditions for economic growth.
