Jacmel, Haiti has seen some progress since the earthquake in 2010 that ravaged the city and much of the island, especially as a potential tourism center. Over the last 18 months, trans_city_architecture and urbanism’s Christian Aulinger, Mark Gilbert and Georg Kogler have developed a comprehensive plan to reconstruct the city of Jacmel.
The concept, which follows the principles promulgated by the Haitian government’s Housing Reconstruction Framework, includes an urban master plan and a plan for prefabricated houses. Each house would be industrially manufactured in Austria, and hand-finished by local Haitian workers.
According to the firm, an essential aim of the design was building an affordable, ridge-top road network that would link the built-up areas of the city with each one another, along with connecting them to Route 204. Each neighborhood developed along the transit network would have its own school, market and commercial center, all of which would be linked to a central business district and a light industrial district focusing on Haiti’s craft and textile industries.
The development would also be green — with steep hillsides in the area, which are not buildable, being reforested, and valley bottoms, which are particularly vulnerable to flash flooding, being used for agriculture. –CJ
