Guyana and Brazil are strengthening relations on several fronts, highlighted by a Sports Cooperation Agreement that will develop sports competitions and share experience in sports facilities and marketing between the two states.

The sports agreement was signed by Guyanese Foreign Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett and Brazilian Foreign Minister Ambassador Antonio Patriota.

The two sides met at the Guyana International Conference Centre in Liliendaal.

Also on the agenda was the Linden/Lethem Road project, which links Guyana and Brazil.

“Guyana believes that without the upgrade of the road we would not be able to fully maximize our trade potential,” Rodrigues-Birkett said. “The trade imbalance with Brazil is really very big — we are never going to be able to compete with a large country as Brazil, but we believe that we can increase our trade.”
