The Bahamas is continuing its infrastructure push beyond New Providence with the announcement of $3.5 million in construction contracts to make upgrades in Abaco.

The government signed three contracts, including one with Knowles Construction and Development Company, Ltd to construct the Great Abaco Highway Bypass Road in Central Abaco. Knowles’ contract totals $965,818.

“The new Great Abaco Highway Bypass Road will provide access to the new Government Administration Complex,” said Works and Transport Minister Neko Grant.

According to the minister, construction should be completed by the end of 2011.

Knowles was also awarded a $1.89 million contract to resurface the runway and apron at Abaco’s Treasure Cay Airport. A third contract, for $630,000, went to John Williams Construction for the construction of a sidewalk along Abaco’s Forest Drive.

The announcement follows a massive road works project currently underway encompassing 19 major corridors and intersections in New Providence that should be completed by the first quarter of 2012.
