A joint Spanish-Jamaican initiative is working to focus on environmental awareness, with the second phase of the Spanish Jamaica Foundation’s programme aiming to promote a cleaner environment in Montego Bay beginning this week.

The first phase of the programme, which was implemented last month, involved an educational campaign in four schools in and around Montego Bay.

Increasing threats to the environment make these kinds of initiatives a necessity, Spanish Ambassador to Jamaica Celsa Nuno said today.

“The awareness of this situation is what has led the Spanish Jamaica Foundation to partner with key stakeholders in the Montego Bay area, in order to support efforts undertaken to reduce damage caused by pollution to the marine environment along the Montego Bay coastline,” she said.

According to Jamaican Minister of Water, Environment and Housing Dr Horace Chang, Montego Bay’s heavy tourism concentration made its cleaner environment even more essential.
