REDjet Licence Controversy Continues between Barbados, Trinidad

The failure of new low-cost air carrier REDjet to obtain a licence to fly from Barbados to Trinidad continues to stoke tensions between the two countries, with Barbados Prime Minister Freundel Stuart yesterday claiming that Trinidad was “second-guessing” his government’s aviation officials. “We in Barbados certified REDjet in Barbados as safe,” he said. “We are being second-guessed on that. Other people certify their aircraft and we don’t second-guess them.” Last week, in an interview with Caribbean Journal, Trinidad Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley said that the industry needed competition, but was happy that the process was moving slowly and it was being confirmed that the carrier was safe.
