Jamaican MP Leaves People’s National Party in Dual-Citizenship Row

By: - June 29th, 2011

Jamaican MP Sharon Hay-Webster has left the opposition People’s National Party, saying she could not tolerate what she described as a lack of support from the party over her case involving dual citizenship. Hay-Webster is among several Jamaican MPs who have been the subject of controversy by having dual citizenship, which is prohibited by the Jamaican constitution for members of parliament. “In the face of a body of legal opinion substantiating my stance from day one, that my case is inherently different from those decided, I insist I will not be rushed, or pushed, but I am intent on allowing due process to take its course. This is my right,” she said. Hay-Webster had considered relinquishing her U.S. citizenship, but changed her mind in May. The PNP’s youth organization then called for her resignation.
