Barbados’ capital, Bridgetown, has been named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, joining the Ancient Beech Forests of Germany and a Hiraizumi, Japan. Historic Bridgetown and its garrison date back to the 17th century. UNESCO noted the city’s “serpentine urban layout” that testified to a different approach to town-planning compared to Spanish and Dutch cities of the same time period.
