Jamaica’s two political parties had vastly different reactions to the findings of the Manatt Commission of Enquiry report, which was tabled in Parliament yesterday. The ruling Jamaica Labour Party said it was “satisfied” with the findings, according to a release by JLP Chairman Mike Henry. People’s National Party President Portia Simpson Miller said the findings were a “whitewash.” The report did not find any sanctions to be necessary for any Jamaican officials. It did find, however, that the position of the Attorney General should be under review, and that the prime minister should have “distanced himself completely” from the matter, which led to “the unfortunate suspicion that he was protecting an alleged narcotics dealer and drug smuggler.” [Jamaica Observer]
