Trinidad Government Divided on FIFA’s Warner Allegations

The FIFA corruption scandal has an especially close relationship with Trinidad, as Jack Warner, one of several officials suspended pending a FIFA probe, was not just CONCACAF’s president, but remains Trinidad’s Minister of Works and Transport. But the People’s Partnership government is divided on how the bribery allegations should impact Warner’s standing in the government. “I think the issue is now bigger and the charges that have been proffered against Warner and whoever else,” said Errol McLeod, the leader of the Movement for Social Justice and Minister of Labour Small and Micro Enterprises. The National Joint Action Committee, however, endorsed the position of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who had taken an innocent-until-proven-guilty stance. [Trinidad Express]
