Travel company Sunwing continues to expand its routes in the Caribbean region.

The firm announced this week that it would be adding direct flights from Windsor, Ontario to Cancun later this year.

The service will launch Dec. 21, according to the company.

“We are delighted to offer this new Sunwing service directly out of Windsor as an extension to our regular program of winter flights that has been in operation here since 2010,” said Andrew Dawson, Chief Operating Officer, Sunwing Travel Group. “This will be the first season that we are able to operate flights to three different destinations from Windsor and we feel that Riviera Maya is a great addition to the flying schedule. We look forward to welcoming vacationers from Southwestern Ontario to our recently opened Sunwing exclusive resorts in the area.”

The new service means residents of Windsor and Essex will not need to make the trip to Toronto or cross the US border for a direct flight to Cancun.

“We will be able to fly directly to Cancun from YQG with all the ease, comfort and convenience we have come to appreciate when using Windsor International Airport,” said Drew Dilkens, Mayor of the City of Windsor and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Windsor International Airport. “The launch of the Cancun service is an important step in the growth of our airport.”
