Grenadians Head to the Polls to Choose Next Government

Grenadians go to the polls Tuesday to decide the country’s next Parliament and Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Tillman Thomas and the National Democratic Congress face off against former Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell’s New National Party and the upstart National United Front, led by Glynis Roberts.

Roberts was one of several Cabinet Ministers in Grenada who resigned from Thomas’ government in 2012 following internal strife in the NDC.

The most recent departure was Foreign Minister Karl Hood, who has reportedly voiced support for Mitchell’s NNP.

A number of the Caribbean’s recent elections went in favour of opposition parties, including those in Jamaica, St Lucia and the Bahamas.

The NUF, which formed near the end of 2012, will be seeking to top the most recent notable Caribbean third party try, that of the Democratic National Alliance in the Bahamas, which failed to win a seat in the country’s May 2012 election.

The party is only fielding candidates for three out of 15 seats in Parliament, however.
